Devonport Jazz 2024

We are delighted to offer a free workshop from our global jazz band, ALLY.

ALLY’s music is drawn from Afro-Peruvian, Cuban, and Caribbean traditional rhythms paired with a modern jazz aesthetic. It encapsulates a cross-pollination of cultures, ideas, and sounds grounded by the distinctive resonance of the Peruvian cajón.

In a workshop situation we will demonstrate a style such as a Peruvian Lando or festejo and a Brazilian maracatu, and then break it down to show how we have divided the rhythmic patterns used across the drum kit and percussion. The rhythm patterns will be clapped through with participants so they have an idea of what the rhythmic patterns sound like individually and how they fit with one another when layered on top of each other.

This is a hands-on workshop and requires no prior knowledge of the music styles discussed. For those players already in an ensemble, teachers, band directors, and composers, we will also discuss how to incorporate the rest of the band. It’s necessary to see and hear how the bass figures align with the percussion patterns.

We encourage everyone to bring instruments if they have them so that they can participate in all aspects of the workshop.

While the workshop is open to all ages and skill levels, we recommend 5+ as some younger children can be unsettled by the level of activity and volume that comes with attending a workshop with a lot of percussion.
